Changing a CD changed my life forever

Two friends and I went for a drive out to the Callide Dam, just outside of Biloela, on the 25th August, 2004. On our way back I sat in the back seat while my friends sat in the front. The driver was changing a CD and in a split second we ran off the road and hit a tree.

My friends weren’t seriously hurt, but I ended up with a broken spine. I’m paralyzed from the waist down. This means I have to spend my life in a wheelchair.
I was halfway through Year 12 and decided to finish the other half of the year while I was in the PA Hospital Spinal Unit in Brisbane. I’d always planned to work in the mines near Biloela with my dad and my brother. Dad always wanted us to work together. I was really looking forward to it. It’s good money too. I can’t fulfill this dream anymore so I’ve completed a computer course instead. I'll have to move to another town if I want to get a good job.
I used to play rugby league. I really miss my footy. I can’t play anymore. I love camping and fishing too, but I still do that as often as I can with my brother and cousins. I'd really like to travel and see some of my favorite sporting events, as well as own my own house and boat.
I’m in a relationship at the moment and that’s going well. My girlfriend works for Bluecare so she understands my situation. It’s hard to find someone who’ll accept me as I am. Past relationships haven't worked out.
I’m still friends with the driver. I don’t blame her. Life’s good. It just takes time to adjust.
